I played around with different flavourings and got myself some Asian inspired spicy sweet potatoes just by using cumin and cayenne pepper. I believe if you use good ‘ol chilli powder it’ll still taste as good.
Sweet potato is an awesome source of carbohydrate and they’re great baked, mashed and roasted. They’re also a real favourite with kids so give this a go!

Carb Prep: Spicy Sweet Potato Fries
Makes – 6 (100g serves)
Time needed – 45 mins
Cost – ~$0.90 per meal
Here’s what you need:
- 1kg Aussie sweet potatoes, washed and cleaned
- 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
- 1 tbsp extra hot cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp cumin
- A pinch of sea salt and pepper
Here’s how you do it:
- Preheat oven to 200 degrees Celcius fan forced.
- Wash the sweet potatoes and clean it thoroughly. There’s no need to peel the skin off.
- Cut the sweet potatoes lengthwise into half, and into another half before cutting them out in to thinner smaller strips. You can cut it however you like, fries or wedges, or even a mix.
- In a large bowl, combine sweet potatoes with cayenne pepper, cumin, salt and pepper and olive oil. Mix them well.
- On a tray and baking paper, line the sweet potato fries in a single layer and bake for about 30 mins. The last five mins use the “grill” function of your oven for a crispy outer layer.
- Serve hot or prep these babies with your other meals!

You can definitely save more money if you purchase in wet markets etc. At the end of the day it’s possible to eat healthy without breaking the bank. Also, ~ denotes the items that should already be in your pantry for a long time or it’s a very small amount.
